Shotgunning a beer gets a little messy for these guys.

Kaiser Wilhelm once said, “Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world.” If the Kaiser and his significant other had tipped this bottle, we’d all be “sprechenden Deutsch!”

The Kaiser lager

For The Kaiser, Avery Brewing Co. takes a traditional Oktoberfest – gorgeous, deep copper sheen, massive malty backbone, and spicy, floral, pungent noble hops – then intensifies each attribute to create a 10.2% ABV Imperial Oktoberfest. The Kaiser was the third in the brewery’s “Dictator Series,” which also includes The Czar Imperial Stout and The Maharaja Imperial IPA.

Released annually since 2004, this year’s The Kaiser highlight’s the benefits of the brewery’s new yeast propagation system.

“The rich German malts really take center stage in this year’s The Kaiser,” said Avery’s Director of Operations Steve Breezley. “The goal with any lager is to control the formation of the esters, alcohols and other yeast driven flavor compounds during fermentation and keep them to a minimum to create a crisp, clean beer. Yeast health is key and with the help of our new yeast propagation system our yeast health is the best it has ever been.”

The Kaiser will hit stores the second week of August in select markets. There will also be a release party at the Avery Tap Room on Friday August 9th at 5pm so throw on your dirndls or lederhosen and raise a stein with us to celebrate this incredible beer.

We have a new friend joining the line up, albeit for a very short stint at the end of summer. The Mule, American Corn Lager.

Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU), will release a new beer to their line-up today: Exit 89 Lager.

Center of the Universe

Exit 89 Lager begins with the water from the North Anna River on the northern border of Hanover County. After COTU filters the water, it is very soft and has a mineral content similar to some of the great lager-brewing areas of Europe. Center of the Universe uses this water to mash in with four different malts. In the boil kettle, several additions of German Tettnang hops create a modest bitterness, just enough to balance with the malt. For fermentation, they went with a Czech yeast strain that leaves the beer clean and malty. After fermentation, Exit 89 went through a cold conditioning period called lagering until (after numerous samplings) they felt it was ready. The beer was then filtered to remove any yeast that had not yet dropped out naturally. The result is a beautiful and crisp amber (Vienna-style) lager.

“For a long time, craft beer was indeed a reaction to the mass-produced light lagers that were (and still are) dominating the American marketplace. But there are plenty of great lagers being made by craft brewers. It’s no longer just about ales. It’s about making great beer.” – says Brewer Mike Killelea on the COTU blog.

This will be the first lager produced by Center of the Universe – and a perfect beer to beat the summer heat.

Center of the Universe Brewing Company opened its doors in Ashland, VA on November 16th 2012. Brothers Phil and Chris Ray, who started as homebrewers turned their hobby into an obsession that is now a successful brewery in Northern Virginia.

The Hochzeit Pilsner is Black Raven’s summer seasonal lager.

Brewed each year in limited quantity, this clean and crisp lager is the perfect summer treat. Brewed with traditional Czech grown and malted barley for an authentic European malt flavor. Domestic and European hops provide a balanced hop bitterness and flavor. On tap at the brewery and available to go in 22oz bottles.

Grimm Brothers Brewhouse, never one to be told what to do, will debut Over My Dead Body India Pale Lager (IPL) on Friday, May 31st, 2013. This will be a draft only release and generally available at that time in their Taproom and throughout our market.

Grimm Brothers brewhouse“An IPL is not a typical beer for us”, stated Don Chapman, President of Grimm Brothers. “We’re more focused on German styles and in fact I’ve been known to say that we’d brew a beer like this ‘over my dead body’. Things change, I’m still alive.”

The IPL recipe was developed by Grimm founder Aaron Heaton and was championed by Director of Marketing/Adult Supervision (yes, that’s his real title), Paul Ferguson, who participated in the brewing. “We decided to let the marketing guy take a shot at a brew”, added Chapman.

“Lead Brewer, Michael Becker had a firm hand on the controls at all times.”, Ferguson emphasized. “My roll was closer to head cheerleader than quarterback. It was hugely fun and we managed to create a great beer!”

According to Heaton, “It’s close to an American IPA but uses our signature lager yeast instead of an ale yeast. With the softer and more rounded character of this yeast, we emphasize the up-front grapefruit and other citrus notes to showcase the hops. A touch of malt and caramel and a light zing from the bitterness brings balance, but don’t be fooled, this is a hop forward IPL using Centennial, Citrus, Cascade, Amarillo, and Sorachi Ace”

The name, Over My Dead Body, was inspired both by Chapman’s earlier sentiments and by the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tale, The Three Snake-Leaves (Die drei Schlangenblätter). It’s a clever tale of deceit, betrayal, and ultimate redemption.

To celebrate American Craft Beer Week (May 13-19th), Full Sail Brewing will release a new beer in their Brewer’s Share Experimental line up: “Bello-Torres y Amigos Lager” crafted by Maintenance Supervisor Eduardo Bello and Bottling Technician Leo Torres.

Full Sail Brewing

Eduardo and Leo were inspired by the beers of their native country, Mexico and the fond memories of sharing cervezas with friends and family on hot summer afternoons. Both Eduardo and Leo have been valued members of the Full Sail crew for over 20 years and have since developed a passion for great beer and a deep respect for the art and science of brewing. “We are excited to have the opportunity to share our beer with you and invite you to fill your glasses and raise them with your own friends and family. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed brewing it. Cheers to good times with family and friends. Salud!”

This crisp, light bodied lager was brewed with 2 row pale malt and a touch of corn. NW Glacier and Sterling hops were used throughout to provide a subtle hop character. This is the perfect brew for the warm days of summer. ABV 5.0% IBU 21.5

Full Sail has scheduled a “Meet the Brewers and the Beer” event at their Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, on Thursday, May 16th from 5:00 to 6:30PM. Join the Full Sail Crew to celebrate and toast a pint of this new brew.

With each Brewer’s Share series beer, Full Sail picks a local charity to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the beer. Eduardo and Leo have chosen to support the Mid Columbia Community Action Council. Their mission is to alleviate the causes and conditions of poverty in Wasco, Hood River and Sherman Counties. Every keg of Eduardo and Leo’s crisp lager benefits this organization.

The Brewer’s Share series is a line-up of small batch draft beers where each Full Sailor takes a turn hand-crafting their own single batch recipe and a portion of the proceeds benefit a local charity of their choosing. Full Sail’s Brewer’s Share Experimental beers will only be available on tap at Full Sail’s Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, Oregon, and at Full Sail’s Brewery at Riverplace, in Portland, Oregon. Growlers to go are available. The next Brewer’s Share Experimental will be crafted by brewer Francisco Martinez and is expected in July.

Cans of Samuel Adams Boston Lager will be hitting shelves nationwide for the first time this week, just in time for summertime occasions that call for the convenience of a can.

Sam CanAfter two years of research and testing, Samuel Adams recently announced the launch of the “Sam Can,” a new can design that aims to provide a drinking experience that is closer to the taste and comfort of drinking beer from a glass.

The new can also allows drinkers enjoy Boston Lager where bottles are not allowed, such as beaches, parks, pools, sporting events, boats and airplanes. The cans provide convenience, and compared to regular cans, they create a more enjoyable drinking experience for Boston Lager fans.
