It's all about the BEER
In: News
24 Mar 2013If you said “craft beer in a can” to us just a few days ago, our first thought would have been “Oskar Blues”.
They are, after all, credited as being the first to can craft beer (We’ve even heard of them starting “the can revolution”). Nowadays, they aren’t alone in canning their beer. According to the Brewers Association, Oskar Blues started the movement that has since been adopted by 52 craft breweries, including notables such as 21st Amendment, New Belgium, Tommyknocker, and Anderson Valley. Among that mix is also Sly Fox, who is now trying to change the can game.
Sly Fox has just announced the release of its 360 Lid. Instead of punching a small opening in your beer (think: any can you’ve ever drank from), the 360 Lid let’s you remove the top of the can completely, essentially turning the can into a cup.
The first beer that will use the 360 Lid is Sly Fox’s Helles Golden Lager, which will be followed by Pikeland Pils. The former is available at the Pennsylvania brewery now and will be available through distributors at the beginning of April, while the latter will be available exclusively at Citizens Bank Park for Phillies home games.
There have been other innovations in can technology, from wider mouths that allow air to flow in as beer flows out to the Rocky Mountains changing colors to let you know your beer is cold enough to numb your taste buds so you (thankfully) can’t taste the flavors. Some have been embraced by the craft beer industry, like Alumi-Tek bottles (Oskar Blues) and skinny Red Bull-like cans (Sixpoint), but none have really spread industry-wide. Perhaps this one will.
