Beer bottle recall in glass scare

Up to 750,000 beer bottles have been recalled by a brewer after glass was found in a small number of products.

Wells and Young’s Brewing Company recalled bottles from 12 brands produced since 4 January, mainly from supermarkets and off-licences.

But the recall also affected some UK pubs and bars and some customers in the US and Russia, it said.

The company said the problem was identified by internal quality checks and no customers had complained.
‘Low risk’

Production director Jim Robertson said: “Through our rigorous commitment to quality, our internal control system has highlighted an issue affecting our glass bottles.

“As a precautionary measure and standard procedure, we have taken the decision to recall the stock which is potentially affected.

“The risk of glass in bottles is extremely low, however consumer safety is our number one priority and that is why we have made this decision.”

Checks to find out how the fragments of glass got into the bottles are continuing, a company spokesman said.

The beers affected by the recall were:

* Wells Bombardier Burning Gold 500ml
* Wells Bombardier 500ml
* Young’s Ram Rod 275ml
* Courage Best Bitter 500ml
* Young’s Light Ale 275ml
