7-Eleven beer goes from worst to first

Looks like I have some (beer-soaked) egg on my face today.

In a piece for Esquire.com in May, I called out 7-Eleven’s new Game Day Light as being one of the “Worst Beers in America.”

But a group of beer judges disagrees with me, apparently. Game Day Light won a gold medal this month in the American Light category at the U.S. Open Beer Championship in Atlanta.

Contract-brewed for 7-Eleven by City Brewery in LaCrosse, Wis., Game Day Light contains 3.9 percent alcohol by volume. It’s available for about $1.49 per 24-ounce can or about $6.99 for a 12-pack of 12-ounce cans. There are currently 59 Missouri 7-Eleven stores carrying Game Day Light and its sister brand, Game Day Ice.

In my defense, however, I will point out that other alcoholic beverages that have won awards for being true to style aren’t always favorites among actual drinkers. Case in point: Olde English 800 malt liquor. It’s taken home gold medals from the Great American Beer Festival, but users of ratebeer.com have ranked it as the worst beer in the world with an average score of .97 out of a possible 5 points.
