Anheuser-Busch received a label approval this week for a new DraftMark package: Michelob AmberBock Amber Lager. The brand is the fourth to be featured in Draftmark packages joining Budweiser, Bass Ale and Shock Top Belgian White. The Draftmark system is currently being tested in only the St. Louis market. Per Anheuser-Busch’s original Draftmark press release…
The Draftmark tap system is an intuitive, high-end device that fits neatly into refrigerator shelves, making a true draft beer experience possible in a few easy steps. Users simply charge the tap system’s battery, insert the beer refill’s pouring spout, place and rotate the beer refill into the tap system to lock into place, close the system, pour and enjoy.
The latest Symphony IRI Group scan data shows that off-premise case sales for AmberBock have declined over 10% YTD through March 18th.

Black Star, the double hopped golden lager from the Great Northern Brewery in Whitefish, Montana is excited to announce their beer is now available throughout Arizona. Residents of the sunny Copper State are finally able to taste the beer that Montana residents and those on the west coast have been talking about.
Commonly recognized for its refreshing taste and great price, Black Star is an excellent alternative to both craft and premium beers. “Black Star is that special mix between craft and domestic beers ‐ a traditional Pilsner style lager with the hops of a craft,” said Steve Brown, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Crescent Crown Distributing in Arizona.
2012 marks a new chapter for Black Star Beer. “We are incredibly excited to introduce Black Star to Arizona,” said Minott Wessinger, founder of Black Star. “It’s the first state we are expanding into this year and I am sure it won’t be our last,” he added. “We wouldn’t be able to grow into these new states without the love and support of our consumers. It truly is an awesome feeling when you can walk into a new state, new store, new bar and say ‘Black Star now available!’”
Not only is Black Star now available in Arizona, but the Montana beer will soon be available on draught in all markets where Black Star is currently sold: ID, WA, OR, CA, NV, and AZ! Draught is scheduled to launch in early April. “This is big news for us,” said Minott Wessinger. “We love Black Star in bottles and cans, but at the end of the day, nothing beats a cold Black Star straight from the tap,” he added.
“Black Star has been widely accepted since we started talking about it,” said Brown. “We already have authorizations in most of the major grocery outlets and convenience stores. The retailers really like the story behind the beer.”

After a successful first year of business, The Wolverine State Brewing Company declares 2012 the Year of the Lager Revolution.
Founded as one of the few microbreweries in the nation focused only on making lager beers, the company has a distinct message and focused goal: blowing people’s minds by doing things with lager styles that have never been done before. The company launched the revolution with a series of premium lagers that appeal to a wide spectrum of beer drinkers.
In 2012 Wolverine will ramp up the revolution as it rolls out an expanding array of creative, experimental, and extreme lagers.
A perfect example of Wolverine’s revolution is Gulo Gulo. Brewed within the framework of the German Purity Law, Gulo Gulo is the world’s first “India Pale Lager.” “We’re out to prove that lager doesn’t mean watered down beer. We’re out to challenge people to see lager in a whole new way,” said Matt Roy, President and Founder of the company.
Other revolutionary lager projects for 2012 include an Imperial Black India Pale Lager, aged in bourbon barrels for nearly a year, hybrids such as our already popular California Common style beer (Common Reaction) and a true Mexican Lager based on ancient German brewing principles.
Building on the profitability of its first year, the company has expansion plans in the works including a function room behind the existing Tap Room rentable for private events up to 60 people. The brewing capacity will also increase by 270 barrels with the addition of three thirty-barrel fermentation vessels by year’s end.
Distribution plans include re-opening the market in Grand Rapids in the first half of 2012 and new placements in Washtenaw and Livingston County territories, with the addition of sales staff dedicated to new areas and support of existing sales.
Three Wolverine premium lagers are currently available on store shelves and in bars and restaurants in Southeast Michigan: Wolverine Premium Lager and Wolverine Dark Lager, and Wolverine Winter Lager. A fourth flagship offering, Wolverine Amber Lager, will launch in mid-2012 and be available year round.

25 Nov 2011Officials at the Genesee Brewery have unveiled plans to create a destination for beer lovers that anchors development on downtown Rochester’s Northeast side.

Plans call for a $2.6 million restoration of an old packaging center built around the turn of the century. The Brewery will transform the 9,200-square-foot building into the Genesee Brew House, which will celebrate the storied history and experience of the Genesee brand. The proposal for the complex includes a working microbrewery with an adjacent tour and tasting area that offers a first-hand look and taste of the brewing process.
On the second floor, a 45-foot long bar will pay homage to Genesee Beer. Homemade gourmet sandwiches and pub-style food will be available at a counter. Indoor seating will accommodate 80 people, while an outdoor deck and rooftop patio will provide the most spectacular and uninhibited views of High Falls. Once completed, the Genesee Brew House will create another 10 jobs.
According to Janine Schoos, brand manager for Genesee Beer, the Genesee Brew House will help tell the story of a resilient company with a rich history that dates back to 1878. “Genesee has withstood the test of time. The brewery survived Prohibition, the Great Depression, two world wars and countless eras in American history,” said Schoos. “Today, Genesee is regaining its standing in the beer industry. And it’s winning over people across the United States. We want to tell that story.
“We have an initial layout and theme developed but we’re working on the individual elements,” said Schoos. “For months, we have been collecting and organizing our history, artifacts and
story so that we can tell it in a way that engages people. We will create a place that immerses people in our culture and helps them truly experience Genesee in a way that is memorable.”
The Genesee Brew House is slated to open in early summer of 2012, pending approval of all applications, permits and licenses. “We hope to begin construction soon,” said Schoos.
During the construction phase, the Genesee Brew House will create work for regional building trades and supportive service firms. The following local firms have been retained: Eric Mower and Associates; Hanlon Architects; Herrick-Saylor Engineers, P.C.; and Marathon Engineering. Upon full project approval, a local general contractor will be named. That contractor will oversee a unionized workforce of local laborers.
“The Genesee Brewery is an incredible part of our rich history and this exciting Genesee Brew House project will help ensure that the Brewery remains a vibrant part of our future,” said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. “In addition to revitalizing a section of Downtown, this project will positively impact our local economy through job creation, investments in existing infrastructure, and the attraction of tourists. This is a win-win for Monroe County and I thank North American Breweries for their continued commitment to our community.”
“The plan to build a Brew House on the Genesee Brewery campus is further testament of the renewed success of the proud Genesee Beer brand, which is so closely tied to the history of our city,” said Rochester Mayor Thomas S. Richards. “This is a welcome investment and one more sign that downtown Rochester is on the rise. I am grateful for North American Breweries’ continued confidence in our city and am proud to support this project. I look forward to pouring the first pint.”
The Project Hinges on Removal of Two Brewery-Owned Buildings
A complete and thorough assessment of all the buildings on the Genesee Brewery site was conducted to determine: their feasibility for restoration; useable space; and costs to stabilize the structures. After careful review, the Genesee Brew House development requires removal of two buildings on the brewery grounds. The buildings, which have been abandoned for more than a quarter century, are beyond reasonable repair and pose safety issues for hundreds of employees and visitors daily. The buildings have been for sale for an extensive amount of time. During that period, the buildings were also thoroughly evaluated by engineers, architects and dozens of developers. While numerous parties expressed interest in the buildings, there were no viable offers. Brewery officials and experts concluded that significant damage to the roof and infrastructure, among many other structural issues would require millions of dollars in repairs.
“The buildings pose significant safety issues to our employees and potential visitors,” said Rich Lozyniak, CEO of North American Breweries. “The roof has caved in, the structures are bad and they are beyond reasonable repair. We can’t create a Brew House that will attract people to this area, without taking down these buildings.
Beyond the structural issues, the vacant buildings attract criminal activity. “People break into the buildings and squat there. It’s typical to find drug paraphernalia and garbage all over the ground. A few months ago, two of our employees were mugged in that area. The buildings block the street view,” said Lozyniak. “We want to make this a safe and beautifully developed area where people want to come. We hope this is a project that Rochestarians can get behind.”
Total Project Amenities
The Genesee Brew House project serves as a catalyst for cleaning up and developing the Northeast side of Rochester’s High Falls district, an area that has been neglected for more than 25 years. This development project will:
History of North American Breweries Investment in Rochester
To date, North American Breweries has invested about $20 million in its Rochester facilities. The investments have included brewery upgrades, new installation of state-of-the-art machinery, energy efficiency upgrades, new technology and more. The investments have led to the creation of nearly 250 new jobs in Rochester. Another $2.6 million is planned for the Genesee Brew House, which will immediately create 10 more positions.
In 2012, North American Breweries plans to invest $14 million in upgrades and installations in its Rochester site.
“We want to transform our neighborhood from a forgotten and neglected area to a place where people want to come,” said Lozyniak.
“This project is the catalyst for radical neighborhood improvements that will open up access to the under-utilized High Falls, while providing a place where people can discover Rochester’s rich brewing history,” said Lozyniak. “The Genesee Brew House showcases Genesee’s heritage and tradition and allows people to experience it in an entirely new way. We will create a destination with all the amenities to attract people downtown.”

On Wednesday, 11/16, Jester King and Mikkeller will join forces for their second official collaboration and their first ever joint brewing day.
They will be making the Texas edition of Beer Geek Brunch, which they’ve decided to call “Ale”/“Malt Liquor” in TX Geek Brunch. This will also be Jester King’s first official Open Brew Day.
Jester King sued the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission last month, in part due to unique restrictions. Jester King said in a statement:
Under the bizarre, antiquated naming system mandated by the TABC Code, we have to call everything we brew over 4% alcohol by weight (ABW) “Ale” or “Malt Liquor” and everything we brew at or below 4% ABW “beer”. This results in nonsensical and somewhat comical situations where we have to call pale ale at or below 4% ABW “pale beer” and lager that is over 4% ABW “ale.”
